My father moved here in 1980 for a new and better life in Canada with his brother and mother, where 4 years later he had me, and 20 years later he told me a story about our family history after I asked because at school we were talking about WW2, and how all of my friends had a relative that fought in it. Ignorant and oblivious, I assumed my grandfather either did not participate in the war, or fought against Hitler’s Nazi army. What I learned next shook me. In 1939, at the height of the Nazi regime, you couldn’t escape Nazi favouritism from any corner of Europe, … "What has happened to our country? To the land we love? " Was very excited to see Malick's first linear narrative since A New World on the big screen. Even though I love the images and performances, I really feel the film would have benefited from major editing. But the film introduces a major talent to world - cinematographer Jörg Widmer. (He actually has 49 DP credits but this is his first high-profile) His images are gorgeous. Village - Vancouver Recent reviews a four-and-a-half, if only because malick is single-handedly responsible for five of the cinema's greatest gifts and this simply pales in comparison. the most committed to story that malick has been in many years, which is beyond refreshing and completely welcome, being that his most recent trilogy has been a step further in the wrong direction with each entry. VOYAGE OF TIME (which is wonderful) aside, this is the first time i've felt that he's made a film worth a damn since THE TREE OF LIFE. it is bloated to be sure, but it is also beautiful is the way you'd expect; it is a perfect hybrid of old malick and new. this one's a keeper. I didn't pay enough attention to the movie to rate it and I really regret that. I hope I get the chance to watch this again, but at nearly 3 hours I'm not sure if that's happening. With that said, the movie is magnificently shot and the score by James Newton Howard seems to bring the smell of wheat in the wind to the audio senses, if that's even possible. Terrence Malik does an amazing job of catching the natural beauty of Austria, but also the nuanced performances of the actors, and the shots in closed quarters look amazing as well. He somehow makes each shot look majestic and grand, yet up close and personal at the same time. If I watched this again, I'm sure it would fall anywhere between an 8. 5-9. 5/10. Probably one of the most beautiful films you’ll watch(from the shots perspective). A story of a driven faith in the face of evil. About a man whose faith does not bend in adversity and the doubt and toil he must suffer through his impending doom that he has set upon himself. He lived a faithful life and a hidden one as Malick suggested. It has all the Terry tropes, whispered dialogue narration thing, those super close ups on faces and lots of wide shots of scenery and grass. Doesn't do anything that a million other WWII or war movies in general haven't done already. It's very pretty. It's by all means a good movie, I guess. There's better war/WWII films, there's better Tezza films, I might re-watch The Thin Red Line or The New World. It's pretty much just Paths Of Glory, which is 88 minutes btw, (this is nearly 100 minutes longer, more grass and vistas though). Very nice vistas. No one can capture the beauty of the natural world quite like Malick. it's so goddamn beautiful. the length did get to me a little, but its filled with such beautiful moments and the scenery is epic. Full movie a hidden life book. Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and grippingly reflective, this film immerses you inside the life of Franz Jägerstätter and his beloved wife Fani. So in love and so tender I'd their affection for one another, and it spills over into their family and friendships. Yet as much as he loves these excellent gifts, he is confronted with a choice of having to swear an oath to an evil leader who tramples on the vulnerable and is evil. What can he (or anyone) do? He chooses to walk in the footsteps of Christ and suffer. He chose not to defend himself, not reviling when reviled at, not bowing to the pressure of swearing allegiance to Hitler when everyone else did it, not listening to the voices of everyone (but Fani) tell him that resisting makes no difference and he would wreck his family. He embraced the path of suffering even though no one but God would see what he did.
The film is a visual poem, and all the imagery and music supports the narrative of following the way of Christ even into the valley of the shadow of death. So much could be said about the symbolism of it all, but it's enough for here to note that the biblical themes are not explained but shown through the imagery and music.
See it, if you want a more reflective, interior film that will inspire you to walk the path of suffering when your loyalties are challenged.

The Lord does not teach us to simply "be happy, as is suggested in this film. He teaches us to fight for the truth, for righteousness, for good in the face of evil. Of course, the trouble is figuring out what is "right" versus what is "evil, but nevertheless, a Christian is obliged to pick a side. (The famous quote from the Bible is "So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. br> As portrayed in the firm, this is a portrait of a tragically misguided man who failed to commit to either the cause he was being called to fight for, or to fighting with a real resistance force against it. He refused to do either, opting to only passively do nothing. While we have no reason to doubt his moral conviction in this passive resistance, this is not actually what the Bible teaches. It is just a modern subversion.
